RAS SUDR, EGYPT 18-25th Sept & 25th Sept-2nd Oct

"Superb, flat, shallow water that is accompanied with extremely reliable wind (especially in and around Sept). It’s the perfect place for early to advance intermediates and higher level sailors wanting a training ground to advance their level. Isolated, idyllic, quixotic windsurfing, get there before it’s too late! It’s where we do many of our photo shoots for Boards magazine."

TRAVEL DETAILS

Airport: Cairo
Transfer 2 hours.

What to take & Travel Tips:

  • In September we’re talking shorts and rash vest most of the time, but it’s worth taking a short arm 3mm summer suit, surf shoes, very strong sun block.
  • Surf shoes are optional as there are no sea urchins!
  • Worth bringing a bottle of duty free for that après sail sun downer.
  • Bring a waterproof watch, so you don’t miss those cracking on water sessions!
  • The hotel accepts credit cards, so you’ll only need a hand full of Egyptian pounds if you buy snacks at the airport or on the transfer.
  • Evenings are still shorts and tee’s weather.
  • Bring European round pin travel plug.
  • Mobile phones work. 'Egyptian' Wireless connection in reception - so don't expect broadband!

Ramada Hotel

We're there for the windsurfing! So don't get excited about the hotel. In truth it's quite tired and doesn't match the brochure.  But the rooms are nice, clean and with some right on the beach. We get a lot of repeat business and people have grown to accept Egyptian hotels are up to other European destinations. For those who've been to Egypt before, it's beter than Moon Beach, but not up to Hilton at Dahab. You don’t have to walk more than 300 metres between, room, hotel and board store. You struggle to spend much money, it’s only lunch and bar bill. There is nothing else to spend money on. In fact, apart from what size sail you’d like, there is very little else to think about. It’s not long before you forget the UK and get down to some serious windsurfing.

LOCATION DETAILS

We’ve been ‘working’ in Ras Sudr for over five years and it’s become a real favourite, due to the lack of crowds and the fantastic wind. In September, it has never failed to deliver. Easy launching, plentiful, consistent, cross-shore right to left winds, warm blue, flat waters and maximum 30 people out at any one time, you can’t ask for much more. It has been home to many of our photo shoots. Yes it’s distant, remote and peaceful, but we make our own entertainment, Rum & Cokes and friendly atmosphere. It fees like it’s your own centre.

The Wind

SB has been to Egypt every September for the last 18 years! This is proof that it is one of the most reliable locations for wind at this time of year. We go at statistically and historically the best and most reliable time of year. The local effect, mixed with reliable hot, desert winds, funnels a vibrant wind across the bay – right to left, starboard tack. It is quite feasible that you will be using a range of sails from 4.0-7.0m. But more often than not you’ll end up on something around a 5m. Starting lighter in the morning and really building up by lunch time. If your body can handle it, you often get a good six-eight hours of solid wind a day. It’s a dreamy and dynamic short board venue.

SB on wind stats

“As I have said many times, and reads of the BOARDS series ‘Winds of the World’ know, I am not a great believer in wind stats and they are basically a license to print money. However, as I have been to Egypt so often at this time of year, I can only say we’d expect to get decent wind. At very worst you’d get 50% wind in a week, highly likely to get at least 75%, but we often get planing conditions on every day.
